Women's Association of Torockó
The Women's Association of Torockó was re-established in 1992, with the leadership of Irén Váló. The refounded association continues the traditions of the earlier association founded in 1935, called Women's Fellowship. During the communist era the fellowship was inactive. The head of the Association was Irén Váló till 2005, since then it is Judit Simon. The main virtue of the Association is that "everybody is equal".
The members of the Association are coming mainly from middle-age ladies from Torockó. According to Judit Simon, unfortunately there are fewer and fewer young people every year who are interested about the Association. The members get together weekly in the Association's room, at these occasions they are making strip carpets. Recently they made wooden Christmas ornaments requested from USA, they also do sewing. They are usually making "keresztszemes", and on rare occasions some sewing on frame also.
Women originated from Torockó are the heart of the Women's Association of Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca). They teach the people "master ideas" in Déva (Deva), Torda (Turda), Budapest. Some of these ladies (Erzsike Zsakó was mentioned by name) came to Torockó recently from the Women's Association of Kolozsvár to help the renovation of old clothes and oiled head scarfs and to teach how to make a bone-lace from golden filament (called "batyikolás").
Very important for the community that everyone's birthday, nameday (a special day for hungarians according to the calendar) is celebrated . There are also tea evenings and "parties" on the International Women's day.
They are going to theatre from time to time to Kolozsvár's Magyar Színház (Hungarian Theatre).
Torockó's Women Association attributes are: simplicity, an active life-willing, beautiful handmade works of art, kindness, steadiness.
